Sound not working on on windows xp?

My sound quit working on my computer.. it like has no sound botton thing so its clearly not muted, and even when i plug in headphones it doesnt work. i think the cound configure thing liek got deleted or somthing.. anybody konw how id fix thiss? help :O !
