How do you get someone to change their mind about wanting a relationship?

When my ex boyfriend broke up with me about a month and a half ago, he said he didn't think he was in the place for a relationship. He told me it wasn't because he didn't love me or that his feelings about me changed, but rather that he didn't want a relationship anymore. What can I say and do to make him reconsider? We had an awesome relationship, and even with talking to him now, he's said he's missed me and wish he didn't have to hurt me like he did and wished that he wanted a relationship. I believe that he truly is a good guy and that deep down he could find it in himself to give us another chance, otherwise I wouldn't be asking this question here. I've spent this time on my own and really become comfortable with myself again. I've followed a ton of advice I've found: focus on yourself, be confident, show him you're fine on your own. I'm not trying to manipulate him or trick him, but I do believe our relationship has another chance and I don't want to just give up on it. Please no condescending or reprimanding responses.
