How exactly does someone with no talent become a celebrity?

why is there such a glut of talentless celebrities over the last dozen or so years? britney spears, paris hilton, lindsey lohan, sanjaya, federline, jessica simpson(i'm certain i've left out hundreds more), to name a few? why in the world do people give a rats behind about any of these people, their families, their lives, or their talentless expositions? we have all seen 'B" movies late at night and can't believe we've watched them - so why waste even a single second on these people who couldn't make a high school play interesting?
