What's the subtle difference in meaning among "consist", "make up", "compose", constituted" and "comprise"?

Usually it's a matter of how technical you want to get. If you are discussing sports, "consists of" and "made up of" is pretty commonly used. If you are a scientist, lawyer or writing a more technical paper, you'd probably used "composed," "constituted" or "is comprised of".
